How to Get Your Med Spa Cited by Perplexity

Benton Purvis

Quick answer

Perplexity runs live web searches and cites every source inline, so getting cited depends on ranking for the underlying query and publishing content that answers it in a directly quotable form. Because citations are visible on every answer, Perplexity is the easiest AI engine to measure: search your target questions, see who is cited, and compare their content structure against yours.

The AI Engine That Shows Its Work

Most AI search is a black box. You ask a question, you get an answer, and you have no reliable way to know which sources shaped it.

Perplexity is different. It runs a live web search for nearly every query and prints numbered citations inline, beside the claims they support. Click one and you land on the source.

For a med spa this makes Perplexity the most useful AI engine to work on first — not because it has the most users, but because it is the only one that tells you plainly whether you are being cited and who is being cited instead of you.

That feedback loop is worth more than volume. What you learn from Perplexity's citation lists generally transfers to Google AI Overviews and to ChatGPT, which are far harder to observe.

How Perplexity Chooses Sources

Perplexity retrieves a set of candidate pages for the query, then generates an answer from what it finds, citing as it goes.

Two consequences follow.

Retrieval comes first. If your page is not in the retrieved set, nothing else matters. Retrieval overlaps heavily with strong organic performance, which means conventional SEO is the entry requirement here exactly as it is for AI Overviews.

Quotability decides the rest. Among retrieved pages, the ones cited are those containing a passage that directly answers the question and can be lifted cleanly. A page that ranks well but buries its answer in narrative gets retrieved and passed over.

Perplexity also shows a visible preference for recency, for pages that answer narrowly rather than sprawling, and for sources with identifiable authorship. None of that is unique to Perplexity — it is a sharper version of what every AI engine rewards.

What Gets Cited

Read enough Perplexity answers on aesthetic queries and the pattern of cited passages becomes obvious.

They are short. Usually one to three sentences.

They are specific. A range, a duration, a number of sessions — something concrete enough to anchor a claim.

They are self-contained. No dependency on the sentence before them.

They are appropriately hedged. "Most patients," "typically," "depending on the product." Medical content stated with false certainty tends to be passed over in favour of a source that acknowledges variation.

This is the same extraction logic behind answer-first content. Perplexity simply makes the results visible, so you can verify the theory rather than take it on faith.

Confirm You Are Not Blocking It

Before optimizing anything, check that you are eligible.

Some sites block AI crawlers in robots.txt — occasionally deliberately, often because a platform default or a plugin added the rules without anyone noticing. If PerplexityBot is disallowed, no amount of content work will get you cited.

Open your robots.txt and read it. If you want AI citation, the crawlers need access. This is a genuine strategic choice for publishers who sell content, but for a med spa whose content exists to attract patients, blocking the engines that recommend practices is self-defeating.

A Measurement Routine That Takes Twenty Minutes

Perplexity's transparency makes a real baseline cheap to build.

  1. Write down fifteen questions patients actually ask — treatment questions, cost questions, comparisons, and two or three local provider queries.
  2. Run each in Perplexity.
  3. For each, record whether you are cited, which practices are cited, and how many sources the answer used.
  4. Repeat monthly.

Within two cycles you will see which question categories you are competitive in and which you are absent from. More usefully, you get a reading list: the cited competitors' pages, which you can examine directly for what they answer that you do not.

That competitive read is the fastest content-gap analysis available in this category, and it costs nothing.

Rewriting a Page for Citation

The gap between an uncited page and a cited one is usually smaller than it looks. Here is a real pattern.

A practice has a Botox page ranking around position six for "how long does Botox last in [city]." It is not cited by Perplexity. The relevant part of the page reads:

Our approach to neurotoxin treatment is highly individualized. During your consultation, our injector will assess your facial anatomy, muscle strength, and aesthetic goals to develop a treatment plan tailored specifically to you. Longevity varies from patient to patient based on a number of factors.

The information a reader wants is technically present — longevity varies — but there is no number anywhere, and the passage cannot be lifted as an answer to anything.

The rewrite adds a heading and leads with the answer:

How long does Botox last? Botox typically lasts three to four months for most patients. First-time patients often find their initial treatment wears off slightly faster, around ten to twelve weeks, with longer duration after subsequent sessions. Longevity depends on the dose used, the treated area, and individual metabolism — patients with faster metabolisms and those who exercise heavily often metabolize it more quickly.

Nothing was removed. The consultation paragraph still follows, where it belongs. What changed is that the page now opens the section with a self-contained, specific, appropriately hedged answer under a heading that names the question.

That is generally the whole intervention. Not new pages, not more words — moving the answer to the front and making it concrete.

Turning Citations Into Patients

Being cited is not the goal. Being chosen is.

When Perplexity cites you, a reader sees your practice name attached to a confident answer, and some fraction click through. That click lands on a page that now has to convert someone who arrived mid-research, already partly informed.

So the pages you optimize for citation still need the full apparatus: clear next step, honest pricing, visible credentials, easy booking. A page that earns citations and then offers no obvious way to book has converted an expensive win into a browsing session.

Build them on the structure in our service page template, which handles both jobs at once.

Start This Week

Open Perplexity. Ask it the five questions you most want to be the answer to. Read the citations.

If you are absent, open the pages that were cited and compare them to yours, section by section. The gap is usually not subtle, and it is usually structural rather than a matter of writing quality.

Frequently asked questions

How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT for local search?

Perplexity runs a live web search for nearly every query and shows numbered citations inline. ChatGPT blends trained knowledge with browsing depending on the question. That makes Perplexity more current, more traceable, and far easier to measure and influence.

Does Perplexity use Google's rankings?

It runs its own retrieval rather than mirroring Google, but the pages it surfaces overlap heavily with strong organic results. In practice, content that ranks well on Google is the pool Perplexity draws from, so conventional SEO remains the foundation.

How do I check whether Perplexity cites my med spa?

Search your key questions directly in Perplexity and read the citation list on each answer. Because sources are numbered and linked, you get an unambiguous yes or no per query. Repeat monthly across a fixed question list to track movement.

Do I need to do anything special to be indexed by Perplexity?

No separate submission exists. Perplexity crawls the open web, so a technically healthy, crawlable site is the requirement. Confirm you are not blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt if you want to be eligible for citation.

Is Perplexity traffic worth pursuing given lower volume than Google?

The volume is smaller but the intent is unusually high, and users tend to be researching a decision rather than browsing. More importantly, the content structure that earns Perplexity citations is the same structure that earns Google AI Overview citations, so the work serves both.
